It is understood that his father was William Walter HOLGATE who married Susannah in 1883 and is living with Susan and John Arthur in Rolph's Yard, Chelmsford as a Lodger in the 1881 census, listed as a Journeyman Carpenter. Susannah is listed as a Silk Mender at Factory and they are living with Emma PAVELEY (although listed as PAVEY) who was 49 and widowed and a Laundress (Susannah's mother). John Arthur PAVELEY married Agatha Lily NORRINGTON in 1896 and by 1915 they had a large family of 8 children 3 Daughters and 5 Sons. His eldest Daughter Ida being 18 and his youngest son Clifford having only just been born in January 1915. In 1915 he was working as a Carpenter for Holloway Bros, Kensington, Londond.
